The troubles with Korean hedge fund Lime Asset Management Co. have spilled over to judiciary and financial sector as class suits are readied against the operator and selling agents for the funds that have become unredeemable due to massive losses.

According to financial sources on Sunday, investors in the three funds of Tethys II, Pluto FI D-1 and Trade Finance that Lime Asset Management has suspended withdrawals filed their complaints with law firms prepping class actions against institutions that sold the products.

Investors claim they learned their money had been placed in the funds arranged by Lime only in October when redemption became suspended. Some testified that they specifically asked not to put their savings in funds due to lack of intelligence in finance. Others said they were not fully informed of the danger of losses in principal and suspension of payment. They were also misguided that the funds are 100-percent risk free.

If what they say is true, both the fund operator as well their marketing agents – banks and brokerage houses – face damage suits for mis-selling.

Lime Asset Management so far has frozen assets on the three funds after investors rushed to withdraw their money following the news of local financial authorities launching probes into the company for its allegedly unlawful investments in convertible bonds.

Of the total 5 trillion won sales in Lime funds, 1.5 trillion won was sold by bankers – 634.6 billion won by Woori Bank, 472.7 billion won by Shinhan Bank, and 174.2 billion won by KEB Hana Bank – as of the end of September last year.

Meanwhile, banks have institutionalized divisions to strengthen consumer protection amid a serious of losses related to exotic financial products.

KEB Hana Bank has newly formed an investment product service division under which three teams focus on investment monitoring and risk management. Shinhan Bank also reorganized its related service team for more focus on it.

An outsider auditor will disclose its findings on Lime Asset Management funds this week.
